Diplomatic actions are accessed by right-clicking a character's portrait.
Many interactions show approximate AI reasoning in tooltips:
- Each reason is shown with a number of - of +
- ++ indicates a range from +1.5 to +2.4
- ----- sometimes indicates a "blocking" reason that cannot be overcome with enough +'s
Most interactions require the target to be within diplomatic range. Your nearest controlled provinces must be within a distance of 700 though characters of the same religion or culture receive a large range with each other. Notable exceptions to the range requirement are ransoming/abducting prisoners, the "straighten up" interaction for decadent relatives, and special requests made of religious heads.
The following actions may be available:
Feudalism
Revoke title
- 主条目:Title revocation
Grant landed title
You must be able to give away the title:
- Cannot give away your sole primary title
- Cannot give away your capital if you are not allowed to change capital
- Cannot give away a county or barony that is occupied
- Title is not contested in a war (as the wargoal)
The recipient must be able to take the title:
- For feudal titles, recipient "must be able to marry and produce heirs" (not , , or ).
- For duchies and higher, recipient must already hold a county or higher (or granting "with lower titles")
- Women may only be granted titles if:
- they are already landed, or
- the realm has Absolute Cognatic succession, or
- the title is theocratic and your religion allows female priests.
- For religious head titles, recipient must have correct religion
- Hindu recipients must have the correct caste
- Children cannot be given theocratic titles
- Not imprisoned
Furthermore, the following requirements apply to grants:
- Recipient must be in your realm (OR: at peace and granting to a holy order captain or religious head, e.g. the Pope)
- Nomads cannot grant counties to non-nomads and courtiers.
- Cannot grant kingdoms to theocracies or holy orders (as a ruler of different government)
- Cannot grant counties to ruler of different government groups, if it would put you over one of the following limits:
- Feudal realms are limited to 10% of counties under republic control and 10% of counties under theocratic control
- Merchant republics are limited to 10% of counties under theocratic control
- Cannot give theocracies more than one duchy or kingdom
- Cannot grant titles to patricians (even doges!) unless you are their direct liege
- Cannot give your primary heir more than a single county title, if using gavelkind succession. Furthermore, the county must be one they already expected to inherit.
- Cannot give your primary heir a theocratic title (as this will disinherit him). No heir can be given a theocratic title under gavelkind. Note that Muslim holders of mosques are considered feudal, so these restrictions doesn't apply to them.
Notes:
- The recipient does not need to be a direct vassal. This means that if the recipient ends up with the same rank as his current liege, he will no longer be a vassal to that liege.
- Granting a title of the same rank as your primary title will make the recipient independent (of you; they will share your liege if you're a vassal).
- Granting a title automatically transfers lower de jure vassals. This gives an opinion bonus (+10 vassal transfer) for each transferred vassal of count+ tier.
- The recipient will get a positive opinion modifier toward you for 10 years. The size of the bonus depends on the title granted:
- Barony: +20
- County: +40
- Duchy: +60
- Kingdom: +80
- Empire: +100
- These bonuses stack.
- Granting a county to a local mayor (or priest) will raise their existing city (or temple) to the status of county capital.
- Granting a county or barony to a courtier will give them the best government type for the given holding type.
- Creating a theocracy of your religion (or granting land to a theocracy of your religion) gives piety. Not applicable to Muslims.
- A title that has been granted cannot be revoked within the next 12 months.
Grant viceroyalty
- For strategies, see The art of ruling an empire
Requirements:
- Charlemagne DLC
- Granter:
- Emperor or king
- Feudal or Iqta
- Viceroyalty law
- Recipient:
- Count or above
- Same government type
Effects:
- The recipient will be ruler of the viceroyal tile
- Granting a viceroyal duchy to a count may change their succession law to primogeniture
- Granting a viceroyal kingdom or a count or duke will change their succession law to match the kingdom's law
- The opinion bonus is half that of granting a title
Notes about viceroys:
- Viceroyal titles revert to liege upon the viceroy's death
- Vassals of viceroys cannot use "claim on liege" factions to replace the viceroy
- However, vassals of viceroys can use oust ruler factions (AI: only for hated tyrants) or directly declare claim wars (AI: never).
- If a viceroyal title reverts to top liege, it ceases to be a viceroyalty
- If a viceroy becomes independent, the title becomes hereditary
- If you grant independence to a viceroy, you gain a strong but non-inheritable claim on the title (but also a 10-year truce)
- If you have feudal vassals with non-de-jure territory, granting them the relevant viceroyalty causes that non-de-jure territory to revert, as if they controlled it only because you granted them the viceroyalty. Thus, you can steal vassals and even demesne counties from overextended feudal vassals.
- If you have Imperial Administration, you may revoke duchy-tier viceroy titles without upsetting other vassals
- Note that the Conclave council law for granting titles does not include viceroyalties.
- Having direct vassal viceroys upsets feudal duke+ vassals (except those with viceroyalties as primaries). This makes it disadvantageous to have a large empire that's half feudal and half viceregal. The penalties are:
- -2 opinion per viceroy kingdom held by a (direct) vassal
- -1 opinion per viceroy duchy held by a direct vassal
Award honorary title
- 主条目:Honorary title
Condition are:
- Character is your courtier or direct vassal
- Character is not imprisoned
- Character matches the requirements of the honorary title
Revoke honorary title
Revoking an honorary title with a positive opinion modifier adds the opinion malus "Revoked my Honorary Title" (-20).
The titles of Court Guru and Hermetic's Apprentice cannot be revoked. The title of Court Physician cannot be revoked while being treated.
要求臣服
Independent rulers will sometimes accept diplomatic vassalization, swearing fealty to a liege peacefully. This is a useful way to expand one's realm without going to war or needing to forge a claim.
AI rulers will never accept diplomatic vassalization if any of the following are true:
- Ruler is a king or equivalent.
- Ruler is a different religion than the liege.
- Ruler is neither a rightful de jure vassal nor a neighbour.
- Ruler has more troops than the liege.
If none of the above are true, AI rulers will swear fealty when asked if they like the liege, the liege has a significantly larger number of troops, and at least two of the following are true:
- Ruler is at least two ranks below the liege (Baron-Duke, Count-King, Duke-Emperor).
- Ruler is the same culture as liege.
- Liege is the rightful de jure overlord.
Factors | Value | Description |
---|---|---|
I am a king! | -5 (blocking) | Kings cannot be vassalized diplomatically. |
False religion | -5 (blocking) | Even if the same religious group as liege. |
Distant realm | -5 (blocking) | You need a land border with the character, if you're not their de jure liege. |
Weaker than I am | -6 (blocking) | Military must be superior to the vassal |
Base reluctance | -2 | |
Not my de jure Liege | -3 | |
Foreign culture | -4 or -3 | -3 if same culture group |
Small difference in rank | -3 | At least two ranks difference (Baron-Duke, Count-King, Duke-Emperor) to negate |
Power | -5 to +5 | Amount varies based on relative military power. If you're weaker than the target, "Weaker than I am" will trigger instead of a negative Power modifier |
Opinion | -2 to +1 |
Swear fealty
- Independent
- At peace
- Not imprisoned
- New liege must be an independent ruler of higher rank than you
- New liege must be your neighbor or de jure liege
Transfer vassalage
Effects:
- Give control of a direct vassal of yours to another vassal, of higher rank than the transferred vassal.
- Gives +10 opinion bonus for 10 years
Requirements:
- Vassal to be transferred is not at war
- Vassal to be transferred is not an antipope
- Vassal to be transferred is not a minor patrician
- Dukes may only be transferred to their de jure liege king (except titular dukes)
For example, suppose you're the King of Ireland and the Duke of Munster is your vassal. When you vassalise the Earl of Desmond, he's your direct vassal, but his county is de jure part of Munster. This situation gives the Duke of Munster a -25 "Wants Control of the County of Desmond" opinion penalty towards you. Transferring Desmond's vassalage to Munster (making him Munster's vassal instead of yours) removes these penalties but also gives an opinion bonus, for an opinion swing of 35 per vassal transferred. This is the main reason why it's a good idea to keep de jure territories together.
If a count is leading a faction, transferring his vassalage to a duke will completely remove the faction, requiring someone else to found it again and all the previous members to rejoin. This is a good way to take care of a faction.
Retract vassalage
- Main article: Title revocation#Vassal retraction
Grant independence
You may grant independence to a direct vassal who is at peace, and is either not a de jure vassal or of a different religion.
- The target becomes independent.
- Adds the opinion modifier "Granted Independence: +30" for 10 years. You will not be able to offer them vassalization again, though you can still press claims against them.
- Creates a bilateral 10-year truce. Thus, you cannot declare war immediately after making them independent without breaking a truce and losing a ton of prestige.
- Granting independence to a viceroy gives you a strong, non-inheritable claim on the viceregal title
- Reduces threat
If you are a vassal, you cannot grant full independence to your vassals, but you can use the Transfer Vassalage action to transfer them to your liege instead.
Independent rulers cannot join factions against you, so selectively granting independence is one way to avoid a civil war.
Demand peace
With The Reaper's Due, players may demand that a vassal end a war, either forcing the attacker to white peace or the defender to surrender.
If you hold a favor on the vassal, they cannot refuse. If the vassal holds a favor on you, you cannot make the demand.
Otherwise, there is a five-year cooldown and the vassal has several choices. They may offer to comply for a favor (if Conclave is enabled), offer to comply for money, or refuse. With Late Feudal or Imperial Administration, refusal is considered treachery, providing just cause for imprisonment or revocation.
Demand gavelkind
With The Reaper's Due, players may demand that a feudal vassal switch to gavelkind succession. The favor mechanics and vassal options are similar to "Demand peace", above.
Suggest fatwa
A Muslim ruler may request a ruling against a vassal whose dynasty is seen as decadent. If the ruler's Court Imam agrees to issue a fatwa, it allows the ruler to imprison the vassal or revoke one title.
Ruler:
- Less than 40% decadence
- At least 100 piety
Targeted vassal:
- At least 40% decadence
- Less than 100 piety
- Not the same dynasty
- At least 16 years old
- Landed
- Has not had a fatwa suggested against them within the last 1140 days (3.1 years)
If the Court Imam is AI-controlled, he decides based on opinion of the liege and target (cutoffs at -50, 0, +50).
Courtiers
Invite to court
- For strategies, see: Gathering courtiers
The target character must be:
- Adult
- Not a ruler
- Not having a claim pressed
- Not imprisoned
- Not a concubine
- Women in patrilineal marriages (and men in matrilineal marriages) cannot be invited if they are in the same court as their spouse
- Not a loyal servant
When invited without a favor, courtiers accept or decline based on the following factors:
Factors | Value | Display | Description |
---|---|---|---|
False Religion | Blocking | ----- | If different religious group (i.e. Infidel). Not applied for heretic or religious differences inside the same religious group. |
Preparing adventure against me | Blocking | ----- | |
Opinion of <Requester> | 1 ⋅ dislike 1 ⋅ like |
A courtier who likes you is more likely to accept your invitation. Linear. | |
Opinion of <Current Liege> | ½ ⋅ dislike 2 ⋅ like |
A factor of ½ is applied to negative opinions, while a factor of 2 is applied to positive opinions. The latter means that a courtier with even a moderately positive opinion of their liege can be very difficult to invite. | |
<Current liege> is unable to press my claims | +50 | +++ | Men. Current liege controls some(?) of the character's claimed titles. Increased for multiple claims(?). The courtier hopes you will press the claim in his name against his previous liege. |
<Requester> is unable to press my claims | ----- | Men. You control all(?) of the character's claimed titles, and thus cannot press his claims (unless you first grant independence to a vassal). | |
<Requester> has the power to press my claims | +++ | Counter-intuitively, this applies when you are unable to press the claim. Possibly a bug. | |
<Requester> is my lover | +++ | ||
Wants to stay with lover | --- | Even if lover is spouse who would move with them | |
<Requester> is my friend | + | ||
Close relative | ++ | You are a close relative and the current liege is not | |
No reason to move | -20 | - | If none of above reasons are applicable. May be waived for some characters who do not hold council or commander positions. |
Base Reluctance | -10 | - | Always applied. |
Found my calling | ----- | Most members of holy orders and theocracies (including vassals of theocracies) |
Opinion difference for accepting invitations
As an example, a player might want to invite a lowborn councilor. To overcome "no reason to move" (-20) and "base reluctance" (-10), the adjusted opinion difference must be at least 31. Specifically, the courtier's opinion of the inviter must be 31 points higher than (half negative opinion of liege, or double positive opinion of liege).
Ask to leave court
- Requires The Reaper's Due DLC.
- Courtier is adult, not incapable, not imprisoned, not in seclusion
- Courtier is not your close relative, dynasty member, or spouse
- Courtier is not your regent
- If they are your concubine, councilor, commander, designated regent, or court physician, you must fire them first.
- If they have spouses in your court, the above requirements apply to their spouses as well
Lose 5 prestige. The courtier and their spouses move, but their children will remain in your court.
Order to take the vows
With the Sons of Abraham DLC, followers of monastic religions may order unlanded courtiers to take the vows. This most commonly done in order to disinherit a family member or select a successor for an Open elective vassal theocracy.
The requester must:
- Follow a monastic religion: Christian, Indian, Manichean, or any religion with the "Monasticism" or "Totem-Guardians" doctrine.
- Be an adult
- Not have a regent.
The target character must an adult courtier of your religion, and either:
- Unmarried and not heir to any title
- In your prison
- Same dynasty and you both have a bloodline with the feature "Characters of this bloodline more readily take vows"
Ordering a courtier to take the vows costs 50 piety and has the following effects:
- They will gain an appropriate ascetic trait (e.g. or ), disqualifying them from inheritance.
- They will join a monastic order (if possible).
- They will leave your court for a theocracy in the same realm (if possible).
- If imprisoned, they will be freed
- If married, their marriages will be annulled
- If not , they will be upset
- When sending away your own child, has a small chance to add stressed if you are benevolent or remove stressed if you are evil
Send to Holy Order
Christian rulers may order their courtiers to join a holy order. This is most commonly done in order to disinherit a family member or to vie for dynastic control of the holy order.
The target character must an adult male courtier of your religion, and either:
- Unmarried and not heir to any title
- In your prison
Costs 50 piety.
The courtier will either move to the selected holy order and become , or flee to another court and become your rival. Success depends on relative intrigue and on the target's traits:
- Always succeeds if the target is , , , , , , or
- More likely to succeed if target is , , , , married
- Less likely to succeed if target is , , , ,
Council
Appoint councilor
You can appoint councilors using the Council Positions interface, or by right-clicking a character you wish to appoint when a position is empty.
Fire councilor
- Cannot fire a councilor who recently forced their way onto the council using a favor (but can still reassign them)
- Cannot fire councilors during a law vote
- Cannot fire your regent (if they also hold a named position)
- Cannot fire your court imam if you both follow the same Muslim religion
Firing a councilor upsets them:
- -5 opinion (recently fired) for 2 years. Cannot be reappointed during this time.
- -15 opinion (fired from council) for 10 years.
Change council position
With Conclave DLC, it is possible to move a councilor to another open position, or swap the jobs of two councilors.
Each councilor must be eligible for the new position. If a councilor is in seclusion, it is not possible to select them as the first in a swap, but it may be possible to select them as the second. It is not possible to swap a Court Imam who shares your Muslim religion (as this would create a sneaky way to fire them).
Councilors can be assigned new job actions immediately after changing position, avoiding the usual 6 month timer.
Request council position
Use a favor to force your liege to give you a council position of your choice.
Resign from council
Liege will have -10 opinion ("Resigned from Council") for 10 years unless you are over 65, have less than 3 health, or are sick or injured. This opinion modifier prevents your liege from re-appointing you and prevents you from requesting a new position.
Call in council support
They will vote as you do on the council for 3 years. (Exception: if you're their liege, they'll reject law proposals from other councilors, rather than waiting to see how you feel.)
Request council support
- Councilor can currently vote freely
- You do not already owe them a favor
They will vote as you do, but you will owe them a favor.

Misc
赠送礼物
Send gift (also referred to as a "bribe") allow to pay a certain amount of money to a character, in exchange for a 5 years opinion boost.
The opinion increase is determined by:
- the state diplomacy of the sender
- bonus if sender is not liege-or-above of recipient
- bonus for positive
ai_greed
, which is based on their personality traits. A (-25 greed) character will respond as well as a character with no traits, but a (+25 greed) character will respond far better.
Trait | ||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
ai_greed | -25 | -5 | -2.5 | +2.5 | +5 | +25 |
The cost of the gift is 15x the monthly income of the recipient (but never less than 15 gold total).
Gifts are commonly used as a way to get reluctant people to join plots, accept alliances, or move to your court. Do note that multiple gifts do not stack, so sending more money will only help to extend the opinion bonus period.
Gifts can also be used for purposes other than the opinion boost:
- Interfere in a war (especially a vassal war) by helping one side hire mercenaries
- Increase the chance of arresting a courtier you intend to banish (seizing back the gift, of course)
- Increase a prisoner's wealth so they can pay you ransom before they die
- Save the finances of an important vassal or an ally after a lost offensive war, to prevent the appearance of bad modifiers in their demesne that would undermine their contributions to you and make them vulnerable to attacks
- Help an ally to create or usurp titles
- Lure a rival into an offensive war with his newfound wealth, before attacking him and both ruining his war and getting an easy victory.
Give artifact
Transfers an artifact from your treasury to another character. If accepted, increases opinion by 15 times the artifact quality (modified by greed) for 5 years.
Demand religious conversion
Assign guardian
- 主条目:Education
You can propose guardianship if either the child or the guardian is in your court. If both characters are in your court, it happens immediately as it does not require another ruler's permission.
Note that landed council members reside in the court of their liege. To have a child educated by a landed council member, you must ask their liege. To remove a child from being educated by a landed council member, you might have to first move them to be educated in your court before you can send them elsewhere.
Child in another court
Factors | Value | Description |
---|---|---|
Requester is my parent | Yes | |
Guardian is parent of child | Yes | |
Requester is my liege | Yes | Hidden requirement: guardian's culture and religion matches requestee's |
Opinion of requester | +1 to +3? | Vassal is hesitant to have their child educated with another culture or religion |
Child would be a hostage | No | You are not their liege or parent |
Guardian in another court
Factors | Value | Description |
---|---|---|
Same realm | Yes | |
Glad to take a hostage | Yes | Child is close relative of requester (but is not the requester) |
Same dynasty | +1 | Child and requestee are same dynasty |
Base reluctance | -1 |
Opinion effects
- Characters allowed to tutor your children or grandchildren will like you more (+10 Entrusted Ward, 11 years)
- But if this privilege is revoked, they will like you less (-15 Lost a Ward, 5 years)
- If your child goes without a guardian for too long, a vassal may request to become the guardian.
- They will be unhappy if denied (-10 Denied Guardianship of Child, 2 years)
- Your liege may propose a guardian for your child, if you select a guardian who is not of your liege's religion and culture.
- They will be upset if denied (-25 Refused Offer of Guardianship, 10 years)
- As long as they feel this way, they will not ask again (even for a different child), so you won't get a stacking penalty.
When a child becomes an adult, they gain a positive opinion of their guardian (+15 Mentor, 20 years)
Request permission for heritage focus
- Conclave DLC
- Child is not a prisoner
- Child is educated in your court
- Child is landless or your direct vassal
- Child is younger than 10
- Educator has a different religion or culture than child
The child's liege will decide whether to allow the heritage focus. The AI always accepts.
Suicide
Buy a favor
You can buy favors from adults who are not in hiding, not imprisoned, not incapable, not holding a temporary title. Most characters will accept at +26 opinion.
You cannot buy a favor from someone who is currently "influenced by your favor". This includes the direct influence of "call in council support" and "request council support", but also some other uses of favors where you might not notice the extended duration unless they happen to be on your council.

War
- 主条目:Warfare
Declare war
You must be able to declare war:
- Not bankrupt
- Not a prisoner (regardless of captor identity)
- Cannot have raised army levies (other types of troops are okay, as are all ships)
The target must be valid:
- Target ruler must be landed
- No non-aggression pact
- No betrothals to close relatives
- They do not hold any of your close relatives hostage, as wards or prisoners. (It's okay if a close relative lives there, as long as you are not their employer/liege.)
- You do not hold the target ruler as a prisoner (as this would give you 100% warscore immediately)
- Not a current war ally or current war enemy
- No troops in enemy counties where you lack holdings
- Requires a casus belli
- Most CBs cannot be used against your tributaries
- Most CBs cannot be used against other Crusaders if you're pledged or participating (with HF)
You must be able to pay any special costs:
- Breaking a truce costs prestige
- Declaring war on coreligionists costs piety if they are crusading or defending against heathens
Additional requirements for vassals:
- Cannot be rebelling against your liege
- You can only declare war on other vassals if they share your direct liege
- Cannot declare wars prohibited by crown laws (crown authority at medium/absolute, or with Conclave, vassal wars laws at external/illegal)
- Cannot declare wars on other vassals(?) while realm peace is enforced (Conclave)
- Cannot declare wars on other vassals(?) within 5 years of liege interference in your war (The Reaper's Due)
Offer peace
There are three kinds of peace you may offer. Unless your warscore is 100%, your opponent can choose whether to accept or reject the offer.
- Surrender: Your enemy wins the war. The AI will always accept this, except for invasion-type casus belli, where the aggressor may want to take more land before accepting your surrender.
- White Peace: This usually acts as though the war had never happened, with a few penalties for the aggressor depending on the CB. The AI will usually accept this if your war-score against them is positive, but will never (?) accept this when their war-score is positive.
- Enforce Demands: You win the war. AI rulers may accept slightly before 100% warscore, especially if their army has been defeated or they are busy fighting additional wars.
The AI can also propose peace, but it is usually rare. In most cases, it will be surrendering when you have more than 60% warscore, outnumber them and when they are engaged in other wars, especially if the war target is a single county. AIs suggesting white peace is less common, but seems to be possible when either side has little warscore (<25%) or when you are winning (>40%).
AIs will rarely propose to enforce their demands before warscore reaches 100%. Even then, some time, and even months sometimes may pass before they do so. Turning the tide of a war is therefore always possible, even with very negative warscore.
Call to arms
- See also: Alliances#Call to arms
- Only available for wars with certain casus belli.
- Requires a pre-existing relationship:
- An alliance, typically negotiated based on marriage ties or direct relations
- Cultural bonds
- Tribal rulers can call their tribal vassals to war.
- Nomadic rulers (khagans) can call nomadic vassals (khans) to war.
- A suzerain-tributary relationship (who can call whom depends on the type of tributary; even works for no-call wars such as provincial revolts)
- Both independent or same top liege (NB: subtly different from the requirements for declaring war)
Factors | Government type | Value | Description |
---|---|---|---|
Allied | All | Yes | |
Heir | All | Yes | Requestee is your heir, or vice versa |
Tributary | All | Yes | |
Spouse | All | Yes | |
Will not join wars against spouse | All | No? | |
Will not join religious enemies against brothers of the Faith | Feudal, Iqtâ, Tribal (Reformed pagans) | No | Religious wars only. At any rate, alliances with infidels are extremely unlikely to form. |
Relative opinion | Tribal, Nomadic | +5 to -5 | Shown as "We like you more than your enemies" or "We like your enemies too much". |
Too far away | Tribal, Nomadic | -1 to -5? | Distance between you and requestee. (Distance to enemy is irrelevant.) |
Tribal vassal | Tribal vassal | +2? | Opinion penalty and often a prestige penalty for refusing to join liege's war |
Would cost me too much prestige | Tribal vassal | +5? | Only if the vassal already has negative prestige, or when calling into a defensive war? |
In other war | Tribal, Nomadic | -3? | Troops are busy |
Raiding | Tribal, Nomadic | -2 | Troops are busy |
Tributary war against my Tributary | All | ? | As the goal of your war is to steal his tributary, he won't help you doing so. |
War against my Tributary | All | ? | Lieges can't declare most wars on their tributaries, and join them too. |
Interests in my Tributary | All | ? | Tributary is aimed by this war, or will benefit from it |
Enemy is my Tributary | All | ? | Most times, nobody can join a war on a side other than the one of its Tributaries. |
Offer to join war
- You can offer to join the wars of allies.
- You can offer to join coreligionists in most religious wars and some rebellions.
- You can offer to join the war of a liege or above.
- You can offer to join certain vassal wars:
- War must be external
- Can only join vassals using certain CBs:
- Great Holy Wars
- Claim wars
- De jure wars
- Joining a vassal's war actually takes over the war (except GHWs), causing your vassal to no longer be a participant but not changing the beneficiary of the war
- Joining a vassal's war does not require council approval.
- Joining a vassal's war does not activate defensive pacts against you.
Ask to embargo
- Merchant republic
- Target realm contains trade posts from a rival republic
- Target realm does not control the rival republic
You pay some amount of gold to the target realm to encourage them start a war using the Embargo CB. You join the war as an ally, and you pay reparations if it fails.

You may attempt to arrest a character if:
- They are under your control
- You do not hold a temporary title
- They do not hold a temporary title

- Unjustified arrest is unavailable to characters of republic or merchant republic government type.
- Smaller penalty for imprisoning "unimportant" characters
- Incurs -10 tyranny if the council votes against the arrest. (Only if council laws allow votes on imprisonment.)
- Opinion modifier "-30: Imprisoned (attempted arrest)" for 10 years, whether successful or not
- Target's parents will be even more upset: "-50: Imprisoned my child"
The success rate increases with relative state intrigue, high opinion, and use of the marshal job "Suppress Revolts". It decreases with the rank of the target.
If successful:
- Character is imprisoned
- Opinion modifier "-30: In Prison" until released
If unsuccessful:
- Courtier: flees the realm

Arrange marriage
- 主条目:Marriage
You can suggest that a bride and groom marry subject to a few restrictions:
- Characters with certain traits cannot marry: , ascetic (e.g. ), ,
- Prisoners cannot marry.
- Characters who are cannot marry.
- Older women cannot marry, except for Christians(?) and Zoroastrians.
- Priests of some religions cannot marry (and their marriages will dissolve upon becoming priests).
- Members of holy orders cannot marry.
- Members of mercenaries cannot participate in betrothals, but can marry.
Marriages must be patrilineal if any party is a patrician or Muslim. However, with Conclave DLC and the required Status of Women law, it is possible to arrange matrilineal marriages; you may also have to invite the groom to your court.
If one of the characters is not in your court, you must get permission from their employer:
Factors | Value | Description |
---|---|---|
Base Reluctance | -2 | |
Will not consider offers from infidels | -5 (blocking) | When the requestee considers the requester an infidel, they will generally refuse marriage requests. Exceptions:

<Bride/Groom> must not marry someone from another Caste | -3 | Close relative of Hindu ruler? |
<Groom> is of too lowly rank for a regular marriage | -5 (blocking) | Will not accept a patrilineal marriage with more than one level of difference in marriage rank, even if the bride is not in their line of succession or if the groom is of the same dynasty. |
<Groom> is too high in the line of succession | -5 (blocking) |
Matrilineal marriage (into a different dynasty). Groom is either the requestee or (same dynasty, close relative, and 1st through 6th in the line of succession for the requestee's primary title). For Elective Gavelkind, the line of succession checked is the one shown in tooltips (top voted and their 5 primogeniture heirs), not the one shown on the succession screen (top 6 by votes). Baron-tier tribes and mayors don't care. |
<Bride> would prefer a Matrilineal Marriage | -3 to -5 | Target bride has landed title and no dynastic heir, or is high in dynastic liege parent's line of succession, or has a strong claim. Matrilineal marriages are enabled. |
<Bride> is unimportant | -5 (blocking) | Matrilineal marriage (into a different dynasty) and bride is not your daughter, sister, granddaughter, or high in your line of succession |
<Groom> is our councilor | -5 (blocking) | Matrilineal marriage would steal a male council member |
Prestige Effects | -5 to +5 | Prestige effects due to rank difference and Dynasty Prestige, when the requestee is also affected (MARRIAGE_AI_PRESTIGE_VALUE = 0.33) |

Age of <Bride> | +1 to +2 | Young bride |

|
Political concerns | -5 | AI has a CB against you, and does not want to be prevented from attacking you |
Will honor the betrothal | +5 | AI rulers always honor patrilineal betrothals. For matrilineal betrothals, they consider the marriage offer just as they would if there wasn't a betrothal, and will reject e.g. a non-dynastic matrilineal betrothal with a man who is now a ruler. Even then, the AI ruler is likely to send a marriage request to you, effectively honoring the betrothal. |
Marriage type does not match the betrothal | -5 (blocking) | Will never accept a matrilineal marriage if betrothal was regular, or vice versa. |
<Courtier> is too important to send away | -5 blocking | Courtier has ai_flag_refuse_marriage (smiths, some characters from China). Even if character would not move as a result of marriage.

You can also request a non-imprisoned woman as a concubine from another ruler, but the other ruler will only agree in rare circumstances:

Unlike spouses, concubines can be set aside with only an opinion penalty. They will remain in your court.
Concubines cannot be set aside while they have the trait.

Convince to straighten up
- Main article: Decadence
- Muslim
- You do not have a living, landed father (?)
- Target is a kinsman with lower rank than you, not a prisoner, and does not have a regent
This interaction is shown in the Religion interface. It has no distance limit, but is more useful against characters in your realm, because it gives you an imprisonment reason if your kinsman refuses to straighten up.

Raiding adventurers
- 主条目:Adventurers
Settle Adventurer
Offer to grant a county or duchy (along with all lower titles) to a raiding adventurer. They are more likely to accept a duchy or a county with many holdings. If accepted, they will protect you from other raiding adventurers for a time.
Negotiate with Adventurer
As an independent king+, you may initiate negotiations with a raiding adventurer who is in your territory. They will usually ask for one of your counties or one of your vassals' counties. If you agree on a deal, you will sign a three-year non-aggression pact with your new vassal, and they will protect you from other raiding adventurers for 10 years.
The same negotiation chain may be initiated by any adventurer who has raided you recently. In this case, failure to reach an agreement will lead to the adventurer beginning an invasion!
